Local historian Sarah Baker Munro is scheduled to appear at Annie Bloom's Books on Wednesday, September 30, at 7:30 p.m. Munro is the author of Timberline Lodge - The History, Art, and Craft of an American Icon. Richly illustrated with historical photos and stunning new photography, Timberline Lodge (Hardcover, Timber Press) includes biographical sketches of nearly 60 artists and describes more than 250 works of art in the Lodge collection.
Timberline Lodge, located on the slopes of Mount Hood, is an integral part of the Oregon landscape. Dedicated by Franklin D. Roosevelt in September 1937 and a National Landmark since 1977, it attracts nearly 2 million visitors a year. Some, no doubt, because of its "appearance" in Stanley Kubrick's 1980 film The Shining, based on a novel by Stephen King and starring Jack Nicholson.
The Lodge is one of the few 20th century American buildings of its size constructed and furnished entirely by hand. From ground breaking to dedication, Works Progress Administration (WPA) funds employed more than 400 workers and 100 artists during the Great Depression, including a photographer who took the forbidden photo of FDR in his wheelchair.
Few people are more qualified to write about the history of Timberline Lodge than Sarah Baker Munro. She is a past president of the Friends of Timberline, active since 1975. And as historian for the group, she has revised and updated the Guidebook to the Lodge through several editions.
Munro's Wednesday night appearance is the perfect opportunity to learn more about this iconic landmark. Everyone is invited to attend. The evening begins at 7:30 p.m.
