Attention, thriller fans! New York Times bestselling author Chelsea Cain is scheduled to appear at Murder by the Book on Wednesday, September 23, at 7 pm. Cain has been dubbed "mistress of the unexpected," so look for a lively exchange as she talks about her newest book Evil at Heart and her life as a mystery writer.
Cain burst onto the thriller scene in 2007 with the release of Heartsick, her first novel featuring Archie Sheridan. Archie is a Portland-area homicide detective who spent years chasing the infamous female serial killer, Gretchen Lowell, until she finally caught him. Held captive and tortured for days, Gretchen inexplicably sets him free and turns herself in to the police. Archie emerges from his ordeal physically and psychologically scarred, with an addiction to pain killers and a dark obsession with the beautiful psychopath.
Evil at Heart (Hardcover, Minotaur Books) is the third book in the "Beauty Killer" series. Gretchen Lowell has developed quite a following--a macabre fan club who has elevated her to cult status. She has also escaped from prison and has apparently reneged on her promise to Archie. Bodies are discovered at three different sites around Portland that bear a startling resemblance to her former handiwork. Has the serial killer started killing again? Detective Archie Sheridan must crawl from his sickbed to find Gretchen and stop this new series of grisly murders.
Heartsick was a New York Times bestseller in both hardcover and paperback, and has been translated into more than 20 languages. Stephen King placed it, along with her second novel Sweetheart, on his "Ten Best Books of 2008" list. Booklist gave a starred review to Evil at Heart, the recently released third book of the series, saying, "Popular entertainment--the kind that mixes crime, horror, and even a little comedy--just doesn't get much better than this." To Cain's credit, all three novels of her "Beauty Killer" series have now hit the New York Times bestseller list.
Chelsea Cain spent the first few years of her life on an Iowa commune, then moved to Bellingham, Washington, with her mother. She studied political science at the University of California at Irvine and journalism at the University of Iowa. She now lives and writes in Portland.
She is a former columnist for The Oregonian, and has been a regular contributor to The Portland Mercury and the New York Times Book Review. Her previous books include Dharma Girl: A Road Trip across the American Generations, The Hippie Handbook, Confessions of a Teen Sleuth, and Does This Cape Make Me Look Fat?
