CALYX: A Journal of Art and Literature by Women celebrates its 33rd anniversary with a special evening of poetry and prose readings at Annie Bloom's Books in Portland. Five Oregon authors are scheduled to appear, reading selections from the Summer, 2009 issue. Participants include Leslie What (Portland), Lois Rosen (Salem), Mary Calvin (Portland), Helen Puciloski (Beaverton), and Felicity Shoulders (Portland).
CALYX Journal is an American literary magazine established in 1976. For over 30 years, it has provided a "forum for women's creative art" by publishing fine literature and art by female artists who draw inspiration from a wide range of life experiences. Each issue is packed with poetry, short stories, artwork, photography, essays, and reviews.
CALYX has been the recipient of Pushcart Prizes, American Literary Magazine Awards, the Oregon Governor's Arts Award, and the Stanley H. Holbrook Award from Oregon Literary Arts.
More than 3800 writers have been published by CALYX over the years. Noted authors include Julia Alvarez, Paula Gunn Allen, Natalie Goldberg, Barbara Kingsolver, and Sharon Olds.
