Local author Bill Johnson is scheduled to teach a four hour writer's workshop on November 22nd at the Collins View Center in Portland. The workshop is entitled The Spirit of Storytelling. All proceeds will go to benefit Elizabeth Lyon, a Pacific NW author and writing instructor who recently underwent a third back surgery and will not be able to work while she recovers.
The Spirit of Storytelling is intended "to get writers to a place where they can discover deeper truths about their characters," says Bill Johnson.
Bill believes that some writers struggle with characterization because they make their characters an extension of themselves. When a novel's characters become infused with an author's issues or internalized judgments about good and bad, right and wrong, the book usually ends up with a single voice being used by every character. Like clones, they all think, act, and sound alike.
The purpose of Bill's workshop is "to help writers create characters who have fully developed, vibrant inner lives separate and distinct from the author's inner life."
Bill Johnson is an author, teacher, story analyst, produced playwright, and office manager of Willamette Writers, a nonprofit writers organization based in Portland. He is the author of A Story is a Promise, a workbook that explores how to write dramatic, engaging stories. He is also the web master of Essays on the Craft of Dramatic Writing, and creator of Oregon Writers Speak on YouTube.
The Spirit of Storytelling will be held at the Collins View Center, 318 SW Palatine Hill Road, Portland. Time: 1-5 pm. Date: Sunday, November 22nd. Cost of the event is only $50.
Checks for this workshop should be made out to Elizabeth Lyon, since all monies collected will go directly to her. Checks should be mailed to Spirit of Storytelling, c/o Willamette Writers, 9045 SW Barbur Boulevard, Suite 5A, Portland, OR 97219.
