Drummer Scott Amendola is one of those hard-working, game-for-anything talents who doesn't get a lot of recognition but plays a major role in preventing local jazz from slipping into a purely nostalgic venture. He's played with everyone from free-jazz terror John Zorn to modern chanteuse Madeline Peyroux, yet he still manages to make time for his own concoctions.
Thursday night, he helms a quartet with Rova Saxophone Quartet stalwart Larry Ochs and two talented bassists -- Mark Dresser and Lisle Ellis. Expect a fair degree of experimentation that never loses sight of the commitment to swing.
The show starts at 8 p.m. at Oakland's 21 Grand gallery/art space, at 25th Street and Broadway.
