SFJAZZ pulls out some more big guns this weekend. Saturday (8 p.m. at Oakland's Paramount Theater), it's young Portuguese singer Mariza, who has updated the country's fado tradition with a dizzying array of international and popular influences. Imagine Gilberto Gil as a woman with a bit of a blues jones and more connections to the Old World, and you're halfway there.

Sunday (7 p.m. at the Palace of Fine Arts) is devoted to bassist and compositional genious Charles Mingus whose tunes continue to challenge and inspire players and audiences alike a full 50 years after his landmark album "Mingus Ah Um" started blowing minds. Mingus Dynasty, a hard-working Mingus tribute band from New York, takes the stage with local saxophone institution John Handy, who played with Mingus on many of his landmark albums.
