I tend to be suspicious of attempts to unite two art forms as often doing justice to neither. But jazz and poetry have a long and productive affinity, plus I quite like the verse of former Poet Laureate Billy Collins (quiet, you cultural elitists!), so I'll be happily checking out at least part of this weekends "Jazz and the Word" series at Berkeley's Jazzschool.
Collins' work is the basis of Saturday's 8 p.m. show, which will feature composer/saxman Michael Zilber weaving his magic around 11 of Collins' poems. Supple, soulful singer Andy Kirshner will handle vocals.
Poet and Beat icon Michael McClure is the focus on Friday (8 p.m.), when he and other wordsmiths match beats with a variety of accompanists. McClure returns Sunday at 4:30 p.m., when he and George Brooks present "Double Moire," a tribute to DNA discoverer Francis Crick.
Tickets for each performance are $15. Jazzschool is at 2087 Addison St., just a block from the downtown Berkeley BART station.
