Trumpeter Clifford Brown's career only lasted a few measly years, due to his untimely death in a car accident at age 25. Yet the musician has remained a significant influence in jazz, helping to take his instrument to the next stage after Dizzy Gillespie's bop innovations and influencing artists such as Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan and that Marsalis kid.
Five of Northern California's top trumpeters (including SF Symphony principal Mark Inouye) will pay homage to that legacy in a concert Sunday at Berkeley's Jazzschool. They'll be backed by bassist Marcus Shelby's ace trio. And the legend's son, Clifford Brown Jr., will be on hand to emcee.
The show starts at 6 p.m., and tickets are $15.
