Filet Mignon at Ruth's Chris

What comes to mind when someone says “Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse”?

Probably a big burly hunk of cow accompanied by a $10 baked potato?

Well it’s time to re-think Ruth’s Chris, where we had the pleasure of dining last week in Troy. Rather than the formal dining room, we opted for the more casual lounge area, which is test marketing a new Bistro Menu.

Once seated, our group chose Valentine cosmopolitans. Valentine is a hand crafted vodka made in Detroit.

There are a number of bistro options to choose from on the new menu, and we sampled several. We started with a chilled shellfish salad, consisting of shrimp and lump crabmeat tossed with a roasted tomato vinaigrette, on a bed of greens. The shrimp was large and succulent. The vinaigrette provided a nice balance to the seafood taste.

Next up was a surf & turf sushi roll. This clever play on a classic steakhouse dish featured spicy lump crabmeat rolled in sushi rice wrapped with a slice of beef carpaccio. The sushi was excellent and had enough spice to smack our tastebuds in the face.

Another new item is the Tuna Sashimi—thin slices of sushi grade Bigeye tuna finished with a garlic, cilantro and soy lemon sauce. This is a meaty cut of fish that seemed right at home in a steakhouse.

Beef or crab cake sliders are another menu item,  served  three to an order on a tasty petite bun. The beef sliders were deliciously beefy, cooked to a juicy medium, and topped with cheese. The crabcakes, topped with a spicy mayo, were slightly smaller and didn’t really stand up to the bun. I ended up switching to open face.

For those who insist on steak, there’s an open face sandwich, featuring filet mignon sliced, drizzled with a mild béarnaise sauce and served atop a garlic toast. Delicious.

Our evening ended with a slice of chocolate sin cake, a flourless torte of devilishly rich chocolate with hints of espresso. Nobody could finish a whole slice of this!

Ruth’s Chris Steak House is a part of Ruth’s Hospitality Group, Inc., founded in New Orleans by Ruth Fertel in 1965. The Company also owns Mitchell’s Fish Market, Mitchell’s Steakhouse and Cameron’s Steakhouse concepts.
