I always have a hard time with those "10 best" lists, especially when there's a list of products I've never used before. I'll be perfectly content with my good ol' face cream but because someone lists a new one as a "10 best", I'm in the store five minutes later losing all my loyalty and buying new stuff. Of course, it's never as good as what I've already got - well, not really never, but eventually I'll get over the novelty of the new product. So in this case, I hesitate to share this "10 smartest" list which might in some way imply that you should race out and trade up for a "smarter" dog. Remember, in your heart, your dog is always the smartest and best. Always!

According to PetMD (http://www.divinecaroline.com/user/profile/122358), here are the top 10 smartest dog breeds in the world:

#10 Australian Cattle Dog - this is an active, strong herding dog used to dealing with other large animals. It is quick and generally pretty light on the paws - it would have to be, with all those cattle around.

#9 Rottweiler - another herding dog, this dog is used commonly as a guard dog and as a police dog.

#8 Papillion - this adorable little creature is much smarter than it appears to be, and much more of a fierce watchdog than one might expect.

#7 Labrador Retriever - one of the many reasons this is such a popular dog with the American Kennel Club and with families alike, the keen intelligence and quick response in emergencies makes this dog an ideal companion.

#6 Shetland Sheepdog - not to be confused with a Shetland pony though somewhat similar in size, yet another brilliant herding dog preferred by families and farmers alike.

#5 Doberman Pinscher - an excellent guard dog. Even the miniature pinscher can be very protective despite its smaller stature.

#4 Golden Retriever - what can I say? This dog is gorgeous and can learn over 200 commands. This is an ideal family pet for those who have a large yard.

#3 German Shepherd - originally bred specifically for intelligence, this dog is an excellent police dog and watch dog.

#2 Poodle (yay!) - I personally can attest that my maltipoo is the smartest dog in the whole world (see my disclaimer above). Plus they are a pretty breed, and you know that pretty and smart should always be found in the same package.

#1 Border Collie - this is no surprise, since these dogs are widely respected as, frankly, brilliant. They have endless energy and curiosity but can become easily bored with humans who may be less high on the intelligence ladder of life. I've seen a border collie remove the cap off a bottle in about two seconds flat with its teeth. Even I can't do that.

Do you think YOUR dog is the smartest dog in the world? What breeds were left off this list that should've been added?
