My mother's birthday is coming up at the end of this week (happy birthday, Mom!), so we're going to have a nice family excursion to the land of all that is good and pure: Las Vegas. Of course, I'm taking Angel with me, so we'll be driving up since Southwest Airlines doesn't allow dogs on their flights (see my earlier vent-fest on this topic: http://www.examiner.com/x-941-LA-Pet-Examiner~y2008m11d12-The-holidays-are-coming--air-travel-with-your-pet ).
I'm in need of dog friendly accommodations, so I checked out www.petfriendlytravel.com to determine where to stay in Vegas. I wasn't expecting anything on the Strip, of course, but apparently La Quinta Inns, Residence Inns, and Candlewood Suites all allow dogs. The great thing about this site is that it offers a lot of different options for search - not just overnight accommodations but also pet friendly dining and even shopping malls! Did you know, for example, that the Westfield Century City mall allows dogs? I didn't, but this is a very shopportunistic time of the year to learn that!
Another really useful travel site I checked out was www.pettravel.com which again offers not just your basic information on accommodations but also pricing which is good to know before you end up at some fancy four star hotel with nothing more than your dog and $20 of gambling money. This site also offers good information on pet immigration information which would be great if we were traveling more exotically than Vegas but I guess Vegas is exotic in its own way.
I was very disappointed though when I went to www.lasvegas.com. I thought perhaps they'd have some dog-friendly information about events coming up, or places you can take your dog, but nothing! Not one word. No search engine for pets or anything. I was very disappointed. I was slightly more excited with www.visitlasvegas.com because it does allow you to do an advanced search for "pets allowed" but when I searched, nothing came up! No shows or events.... no dining... no attractions or activities. So, despite giving you the option to check out whether pets are allowed, you get nada.
Finally, I tried www.vegasdog.com which is great if you're not looking for a hotel. They offer all sorts of information on groomers, pet hospitals, upcoming events, and various pet supply stores. So at least I know we won't be bored in Las Vegas, Angel and I, because now we've got a whole lovely list of places to shop!
Long story short... I know Las Vegas isn't considered the pet capital of the world or anything, but wouldn't you think it would be slightly more dog friendly given that there's an entire hotel (Circus Circus) dedicated to entertaining little bratty children and filling them with more sugar than 12 large men could metabolize?
That's it for today's rant. Maybe I'll settle Angel down at a slot machine with me and see if she's lucky.
