During this recession people are looking for food which provides the comforts of home. Citizen Smith restaurant in Hollywood combines comfort with an imaginative menu. Located on Cahuenga and just below Hollywood Boulevard, this restaurant boasts of menu items reflecting southern style comfort food but there are some splendid choice exceptions.   When you walk through the doors you get a rustic yet chic feel.

There is a hip back outdoor lounge with couches. Candelabras fill the establishment, but let's get back to the matter the food shall we?  Citizen Smith prides itself on the "Comfort Macaroni and Cheese.” What distinguishes the dish is the addition of jalapeño to the classic.   The flavor of the jalapeño permeates the dish without overwhelming it.  My guest, Chef Tachelle Lawson, was less than enthused, citing how roasting the jalapeño could have enriched the flavor.

South Western, Creole and Cajun are the primary featured cuisines; however, they also serve cuisine which does not fall in those categories. They serve crabcake but don't expect the lumpy meatiness of Maryland crab cake.  Instead one will find that the crab cake is petite, the meat is fine and rather bland in the flavor department.  To the contrary is the Ahi tuna–Ohy my god!  For this entree, my utmost compliments to the Chef.  The Ahi tuna drizzled in chive oil and rolled in peppercorn bursts with flavor.  The beef tenderloin is very tasty but was not served warm.   The side dish which gets an "A" for originality is the side order of Churro fries.  Imagine fried sweet potato covered in cinnamon and sugar. Given the location, it is a popular after hours spot for drinks and the late night appetite.

Signature drinks like Anise, Bruised Kidney and the Glass Menagerie are among the more distinctive drinks ranging from hints of yellow pepper to ginger.

Citizen Smith is a great place to come with friends and has something for everyone.  They have recently introduced a new Sunday Brunch. Be advised that parking is pricey in the surrounding area.
