The 2009 Hip Hop Theater Festival begins today (July 6) and goes until this Saturday (July 11). In its ninth year, the festival travels across the country to present live events and forums for communities to examine and enjoy hip hop and theater. Other cities the festival visits include New York City, Chicago and San Francisco.
One of the hottest events this week will be tomorrow night's Voices Remix: A People's History of the United States at the Kennedy Center. The lineup includes Lupe Fiasco, Staceyann Chin and W. Ellington Felton. They are no longer taking reservations for this show, but there are a limited number of tickets available for walk-ups and it is recommended that you get there an hour before the 6pm show starts.
On Wednesday, July 8 there will be an arts-in-education training for teachers to explore the similarities between Shakespeare's Poetry and hip-hop music. Shakespeare Metes the Beat will be held at the American Poetry Museum, 1922 Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, SE at 4:30pm.
There are also films, discussions, events geared for young audiences (including performances of Zomo the Rabbit: A Hip-Hop Creation Myth, a play that was first commissioned by Imagination Stage) and of course, parties. Visit the Hip Hop Theater Festival website for more details.
