It wasn't too long ago that I posted about celebrating the second half of Hispanic Heritage Month...and time really flies because now the month is almost at an end. You can see this celebratory month out in grand style on its last day (Oct. 15) with Take Five!, a free live music series at the Kogod Courtyard of the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
Take Five! happens every third Thursday of the month from 5 to 7 pm and this time the series welcomes Afro Bop Alliance, a jazz septet that won a Latin Grammy for Best Latin Jazz Recording for their 2008 album "Caribbean Jazz Project-Afro Bop Alliance Featuring Dave Samuels." They also received a nomination for a Grammy award for the same cd. The group blends jazz and Afro Cuban rhythms for an unforgettable sound.
And just so you know, although their musical influences are from far away, the band hails from Annapolis, Maryland. The Washington Area Music Association (WAMA) gave the group an award for "Best Latin Jazz Recording" in 2007.
If you have yet to enjoy a musical performance in the Kogod Courtyard, you do not want to miss this opportunity. It is a great space and since it is covered, it has a courtyard feel, but you never need to worry about the weather.
