Political disinformation is nothing new; it is a tactic expertly wielded by both the extreme right and the extreme left. We should not be surprised and certainly should not condemn the stories when they happen to circulate. Exaggeration, lies and storytelling are a fixture of our political landscape.
I wouldn’t want it any other way.
Yes, sure its frustrating engaging in an idiotic debate with someone that has a negative 180 degree understanding of the facts of a proposal. (“down the chute, grandma”, really?) These types of statements, idiotic or not, are something we should be most proud of. That someone can actually stand up and has the freedom to say these things at public forums are definitely a plus to our society, at it’s core this is a freedom of speech issue.
Just imagine the courage it takes to stand up in front of a congressman, the president, your friends and neighbors and declare that this healthcare proposal will mandate organs be taken from you when you reach 65. I mean seriously, how stupid is that? That they have the right to be able to stand up and say these things though is certainly not stupid.
We need look only as far as Burma to recognize the difference and count our blessings.
Will the healthcare proposal surmount these terrible obstacles of lies and disinformation? As surely as the sun rises, facts will always trump lies in an educated society.
