This morning, in an article posted on USA Today online, Liz Sidoti writes:
Independents always have heft, but frustration across the country with both Republicans and Democrats is adding to it. How that anger manifests itself could signal anti-incumbent sentiment among a group that leaned left last year.
Both Republicans and Democrats have disillusioned, even disgusted, their base. Voters are paying far more attention to the issues at hand, the broken promises and the lack of results rather than the political “talking points” spouted by those in power or those seeking it.
Many Americans feel alienated by the contemptuous partisan politics they have witnessed and are choosing to leave their party for the Independent movement. According to independent voting.org, forty percent of the electorate is now independent. For many, this change is due to the feeling that they currently have little to no representation. How this will affect the elections on Tuesday, not to mention those coming up in 2010, remains to be seen.
Perhaps Tuesday’s elections will be the beginning for many Americans to reclaim what has been lost over the years; their voice.
It’s about time.
