Last Thursday, Nov. 5th, I cruised to the corner of Camelback and Scottsdale Rd. to join my fellow Phoenicians outside of Democratic Congressman Harry Mitchell’s office for two hours to protest Pelosi’s (now-passed) monstrous healthcare bill.

Tom Jenney, State Director of the Arizona Chapter of Americans for Prosperity, helped organize the event and was there with his Barry Goldwater t-shirt, bull horn and one of the best signs at the rally (see video).

It’s depressing, yes, that the House decided to pass the bill we were protesting. But it’s still very, very inspiring to participate in and see these grassroots movements for freedom. Furthermore, on the brighter side of things, I highly doubt “Blue Dog” Mitchell, after voting YES for Pelosi’s bill in a conservative district, will have a job working for the government after the next election.

More and more conservatives, it seems to me, are moving toward the more radical (and honest) libertarian perspective. Now libertarians just need to convince them that voting for a Republican (i.e. Democrat-lite) such as David Schweikert isn’t going to help the cause of freedom. (But Nick Coons, the libertarian running in Congressional District 5, would.)

The future of healthcare now rests with the Senate (and perhaps the Supreme Court). However, the protests also remind us that the American people still have a self-determining voice for their own future, and that we’re not going to wait on government institutions of power to restore our liberty. Because of the grassroots movement, extremism in defense of liberty is now becoming the norm. And the movement is just getting started. Jefferson would be proud. So am I.
