When the winless Cincinnati Bengals (0-2) take the field on Sunday against the New York Giants (2-0), they will be looking to avoid their first 0-3 start since 2003.
Given the hapless history of the franchise, going that many seasons without dropping their first three games should be a cause for celebration.
Unfortunately, in the National Football League, celebrating will usually result in a 15-yard penalty.
A conversation about celebrations and the NFL would not be complete without bringing up Bengals wide receiver Chad Ocho Cinco. Ocho Cinco, an eight-year veteran out of Oregon State, is almost as notorious for his colorful personality and equally-colorful touchdown celebrations as he his for his ability to catch the football. The wide receiver is the type of player you either love or love to hate. In a league where personality is viewed as a character flaw, the player formerly known as Chad Johnson tends to fall into the latter.
A five-time Pro Bowl selection, Ocho Cinco has made a name for himself with his outlandish touchdown dances and his humorous trash-talk. He's done it all from perform Riverdance after a touchdown catch to challenge Michael Phelps to a swim meet. All of which have been in good fun. For his actions, he has been referred to as anything from a distraction to a jerk for his antics. His own head coach, Marvin Lewis, once called him "Ocho Psycho."
Considering Cincinnati's record on the field and their criminal record off of the field, Lewis may want to worry about what name he will be putting on his resume at the end of the season rather than what he refers to other people by.
For the record, Ocho Cinco has never been arrested. His name, whatever it may be these days, has never been linked to performance-enhancing drugs or any sort of illegal substance. In the past he has raced a horse for charity and is actively involved with Feed The Children. He gives it his all every week, often when injured, and is one of the elite receivers in the game today.
Sounds like a real jerk, right?
