The NFL trade deadline, Tuesday, October 14, is rapidly approaching.
By Tuesday, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez, the league’s all-team leader in reception yards by a tight end, may be the newest member of the New York Giants.
He may also be the newest member of the Buffalo Bills, Green Bay Packers, Philadelphia Eagles, Tampa Bay Buccanneers, or whoever else contacts the Chiefs regarding a trade.
On the surface, the addition of Gonzalez to an already stacked Giants offense seems like a no-brainer. With tight end Jeremy Shockey being shipped to the New Orleans Saints in the offseason and current tight end, Kevin Boss, looking rather pedestrian thus far, tight end appears to be one the team’s few weaknesses.
The price to acquire Gonzalez, believed to be a third-round draft pick, is not an issue. If anything, it’s a steal. While general manager Jerry Reese has proven that he is among the league’s most astute minds when it comes to the draft process, the chance to add arguably the best player to ever play his position for a third-round pick, with the potential for additional draft picks to be thrown into the mix as well, is too good of a deal to pass up.
But does the addition of Gonzalez necessarily make them better?
The Giants already have a ton of weapons on offense and only one football for them to share. Gonzalez is anything but a problem in the locker room but his presence may create a situation where too many cooks spoil the pot.
The acquisition of Tony Gonzalez by the New York Giants has the potential to make them either an absolute powerhouse or to create an absolute overload.
Sometimes, the best trades are the ones you don’t make.
