Many times I am asked why I network so much. This question is often presented by people who view networking as just another business chore.  Their angst is only multiplied by the fact that networking events generally don’t occur during typical business hours.  My answer is simple:  I love to meet new people and interact with others and networking is a way of structured relationship building.   Networking events are incredible learning opportunities as well. Since this column started in February, I have attended multiple panelist presentations and learned new things like how to use social media more effectively and how to ignite innovation in the work place. With benefits like these, it is hard to imagine that anyone would not want to network, but not everyone shares this enthusiasm.
One personal objection is hard to overcome; the concern about being shy around others and “not knowing what to do or say” at an event. It takes some confidence building to get out there in front of your industry peers, and a little bit of practice. For this reason, I am excited to announce the upcoming Tektite Group workshop; How to Love Networking. The event is designed for people who typically are not active networkers or who feel nervousness at the thought of going to events. It takes place in a fun and relaxing environment, and features an excellent presenter on this topic. Gail Sussman Miller of Inspired Choice will lead an interactive workshop to help attendees find their inner voice and be more comfortable networking. This workshop has been delivered over 50 times with great results, and is fun way to get the confidence building practice on networking.
Anyone who has ever felt doubt about attending events in the past should be attending, because the shift in your attitude and mindset about networking will be improved. The event will give you some concrete techniques to increase comfort ant confidence in any situation. The bottom line is that you will learn to network as a natural extension of who you are and what you love to do! For anyone who has not attended a Tektite workshop, BNC event, or IT luncheon, trust me when I say that this will be a well organized and professional event. Jean Pickering is a great host and one of the nicest people you will ever meet in business, and she will be on hand for this presentation.
