On December 16, 1773, the original Boston Tea Party protested taxation without representation. The British government in the colonies was unresponsive to the needs and wishes of the colonists they represented.
On April 15, 2009, hundreds of thousands of citizens, in 800 American cities, in all 50 states of the union, protested in a grassroots effort against unresponsive government and dubbed the movement the Tax Day Tea Party. But the government has yet to hear the people.
This Independence Day, more tea parties will take place. Among the specific grievances of unresponsive government are the following issues:
• Irresponsible government spending
• Oppressive taxes
• Loss of individual liberties
• Infringements on states’ rights
• Growing national debt
• Big government/Big Brother
• Legislation passed without adequate deliberation
• Congressional earmarks
• Lack of government transparency
• Violations of the Constitution
• S-Chip legislation
• Stimulus package
• Bailouts
• Cap and Trade
• ACORN
• Socialism
