The folks at Terrafugia announced today that the first test flights of their Transition flying car were completed on March 5 and were a great success. This is great news for the company and for enthusiasts of this new transportation mode.
In an earlier article I wrote about the astounding capabilities of this true flying car. Since then the company has been continuing steadfast work in making this dream a reality.
The test flights were conducted at Plattsburgh International Airport in Plattsburgh, NY. The Transition aircraft departed runway 17 in the early morning and completed a 37 second flight before gently touching back down. Several other successful test flights followed.
The test flights followed a rigorous six months of drive and taxi testing.
"This flight is a symbol of a new freedom in aviation. It's what enthusiasts have been striving for since 1918," says Carl Dietrich, CEO of Terrafugia.
The company press release reports that, "The Transition® was flown by Phil Meteer, Colonel, USAFR (Ret). The chase aircraft was piloted by Giora Guth. Said Col. Meteer: 'The first flight was remarkably unremarkable. I've flown several thousand hours in everything from Piper Cubs to F-16s and the Transition® flew like a really nice airplane.' "
Next steps include adapting the lessons learned from this vehicle to the design of the next prototype.
