The State of Alaska Department of Transportation announced that it would begin snow clearing activities from sidewalks and pathways. Anyone who walks to get from place to place should rejoice! The lack of snow removal from sidewalks has been a problem plaguing Anchorage for years.
An important distinction needs to be made here. Remember that some roads in Anchorage are owned by the State, and some are owned by the Muni. There has been some snow removal activities on Muni roads for a while.
This announcement is a real milestone. When the sidewalks aren't cleared, pedestrians are forced to walk on the side of the road - a dangerous proposition indeed.
From the DOT web site: "The $1,250,000 appropriation funded the purchase of eight Series 6 Trackless MT tractors with blower heads, snow blades, and brooms. This equipment will be used to clear snow from Anchorage sidewalks, pathways, bus stops, and trails in the winter, and then to sweep sand from those areas after breakup."
I am excited as can be about this announcement. I think it's another grand step on the way to Anchorage becoming a civilized city.
