Father’s Day is coming up this Sunday and like many others I can’t help but think of my own Dad as the day draws nearer.  I’m also thinking of my Heavenly Father. (Acts 17:29)  I know for many reading this, their earthly Dad wasn’t at all the kind of Daddy they wanted to bring their friends home to meet. I’m blessed because once the word got out about how fun, crazy and loving my parents are, my friends practically begged to meet my Mom and Dad.
I'm a lot like my Dad only I think he’s wiser than I am and has a cornier sense of humor than I do. He is compassionate, caring, a bit wacky and usually very peaceful. He also has a lot less hair than I do. Though I greatly resemble him I pray often that I keep my hair as I get older. (But who knows, I might be joining the ‘weave sisters’ in a few years or just opt to go bald.)
As I’ve gotten older and understood with greater clarity what the significance in being able to proclaim that the Heavenly Father is also my Father, I have taken many opportunities to step back and compare my Dad with The Father. I know, I know…not quite a fair comparison when you figure our Heavenly Father made the earth and all of creation while my Dad simply makes great rainbow colored pancakes. But hang with me for a minute here as I compare the two.
First off, our Heavenly Father is compassionate, caring, and just; loving, always here for me, wise and definitely has a great sense of humor. (He made me, didn’t he?) My Dad also contributed to the making of ‘me’. My Dad is compassionate, caring and just; loving, usually wise, always here for me and has a great sense of humor.
When I was younger I would sit on my Dad’s lap and he would rub my face with his hand. It would soothe me and comfort me. If I was upset he would hug me and he still has the same calming effect on me today. I can see God in my Dad. My Dad is not a god and he is not perfect but in him I see qualities that make me think of God. I know some of those qualities he patterned after his own Dad and that both of them were made in His image. (Genesis 1:27)
Many fathers don’t think about the significance of their everyday walk, talk and mannerisms. They don’t think about the children around them who are watching every move they make in order to figure out just how to negotiate this life. But they are. My kids are watching me, their Dad, their grandparents. They are watching very closely. I’m so thankful that the parents I got to watch were not only made in God’s image, as we all are, but that they patterned His compassion, love, grace and care in their lives.
When it comes down to Father’s Day and our Dads we aren’t all in a situation to be able to sit and reminisce about how wonderful they made us feel. I know many who grew up without ever knowing their Dad or even knowing who their Dad was. I know many who had abusive or drunken fathers too. But what I do know is that our Heavenly Father’s love, compassion, care, wisdom and sense of humor is there above all else, above all others and He will never leave you.
Those who grew up with less than loving Dad’s often feel empty come Father’s Day. I’ve had friends tell me they used to hate the day that honors Fathers because their Fathers were less than honorable. But once they knew the reality of who God is and that He is the eternal Father in their life, they never had to feel empty on a Father’s Day again.
Even if you come to know your Heavenly Father, will you still be sad for the loss of your own Dad when Father’s day comes? Sure. Will you be sad over the lack of knowing your Dad or recalling hurts you suffered due to your Dad? Sure. But that little space inside you that once felt resentful, angry or empty can be filled with a love that is eternal and only comes from our Heavenly Father. If anyone ever asks “Who’s your Daddy?”…rest assured that God is your Heavenly Father, your eternal Daddy and whether you fully understand it or not, it truly is the reality that I hope everyone will be able to embrace this weekend.
Happy Father’s Day.
