Marsch scored the only Goats goal (AP/Nathan Denette)

CHARLESTON, SC - Another year, another early exit.  No, this isn't a Superliga report, but a report on the recent result in the 3rd round US Open Cup match between the Goats and last years runner's up, the Charleston Battery.  Before a bi-partisan crowd of 3,268 at Blackbaud Stadium, the Goats went home on the wrong end of a 3-1 scoreline.

The home team found the back of the net first courtesy of former New York Red Bull, Randi Patterson in the ninth minute.  Despite the Battery goal, it was the Goats that had most of possession up to this point.  As would be the case for the rest of the match.

"It's kind of been the story of our season," said Jesse Marsch.  "We've been able to create some scoring chances, we just haven't been able to finish them off".

The Goats did find the back of the net though when Marsch scored on a header in the 28th minute.

With the clock ticking away in stoppage time, the Battery scored their second goal of the night courtesy of Randi Patterson again.

For some reason I love to play against MLS teams," Patterson said. "It gives me a chance to show what I'm capable of doing".

Late in the second half, controversy reared as Battery goalkeeper, Dusty Hudock, brought down Maykel Galindo who was one on one with the keeper.  Initially Hudock's tackle resulted in a penalty kick for the Goats.  However the linesman informed the referee that the foul was committed just outside the box.  Despite the actions of goalkeeper Hudock, no action was taken on Hudock

"I don't know if it was inside or outside the box," said Coach Preki,  "I was upset that he didn't get a red card. He's the last guy on defense, and that's a professional foul. He's out".

The second half of the match was more of the same with the Goats leading in possession, but being unable to do much else.  As the end of the match approached, the Battery managed to get a third goal past Lance Parker.  Tsuyoshi Yoshitake scored in stoppage time to put the match away.  It was a physical encounter that featured seven yellow cards and one red card.

Coming in to tonight's match, the Goats had gone winless in the last five matches in all competitions.  It's now six matches since the Goats were last victorious.  Up next for the Goats is the Superclasico with the LA Galaxy on July 11th.  The match is a Goats home match and will also be available on Fox Soccer Channel, and Fox Sports en Español.  Start tine is 8pm.
