Stanford's Nneka Ogwumike has been remarkably consistent during the women's Under 19 World Championships, and on Tuesday she had what has become a typical game for her, helping the USA to a 75-56 victory over previously unbeaten Russia in Bangkok, Thailand.
Ogwumike, who will be a sophomore this coming season, had her third double-double in five games, helping the American put away the Russians, who were 4-0 coming into the game.
She had 12 points and 13 rebounds, leading the USA (4-1) in both categories, and she did her best work in the fourth quarter. The USA trailed by a point early in the third quarter and led by just five points heading into the fourth. But Ogwumike had eight of her points and seven of her rebounds in the final period, when the Americans outscored the Russians 20-6.
"C.O. (USA head coach Carol Owens) told us pretty much to wind the clock down, to take care of every possession, because every possessions was vital," Ogwumike said in a USA Basketball release regarding the team's strategy heading into the final period. "We just did our best to score every time we had the ball, and deflect the ball every time we were on defense."
The Americans scored the first 10 points of the final period to take control.
Ogwumike also had two assists, two steals and a blocked shot on Tuesday in another complete game. She is averaging 13.0 points and 10.2 rebounds for the five games, leading the Americans in both categories, and, discarding the blowout of Mali when she played just 15 minutes, Ogwumike has scored 16, 18, 11 and 12 points in the four games and had 8, 14, 12 and 13 rebounds.
On Tuesday she had more points and more rebounds than Russia's two 6-4 starters, Alexandra Tarasova and Anastasia Logunova, had combined.
On Wednesday, the USA plays its final second-round game against Japan, and will advance to Friday's quarterfinal game, probably against Lithuania or the Czech Republic.
