Stanford's Andrew Zimmerman, a junior-college transfer, scored 22 points for Bay Pride in a San Francisco Pro-Am League basketball game on Monday, helping his team to a 105-100 victory over San Francisco City at Kezar Arena.
Zimmerman is a 6-9 power forward who played at Santa Clara two years ago as a freshman. He spent last season at Foothill College but participated only in practice, not in games, so he did not lose a year of eligibility.
He recently enrolled at Stanford and is taking some classes during the summer. Zimmerman will be sophomore this season, and the Cardinal desperately need big men. Stanford was low on inside players even before Will Paul became academically ineligible for next season. Plus, incoming freshman Andy Brown, also a power-forward type, tore his anterior cruciate ligament last winter and it is uncertain how much he will play this season. The Cardinal probably would prefer to redshirt Brown, so Zimmerman will have to play.
The slender, left-handed Zimmerman struggled defensively on Monday against San Francisco City's stronger inside players, such as NBA veteran Adonal Foyle, but he did contribute on the offensive end. He scored 15 of his 22 points in the first half, almost exclusively from close range, although he attempted several three-pointers that went awry. He also had nine rebounds, with seven of those coming in the first half.
Although Zimmerman was not as productive in the second half, he had two late-game baskets that were critical. He hit a three-pointer with 1:30 left that put Bay Pride up by three, and he scored a layup off a loose ball with 30 seconds left to provide his team with a four-point lead.
Zimmerman is a willing pick-setter who knows his way around the hoop from in close, but it remains to be seen how he will do against strong, athletic Pac-10 big men.
