Stanford women's basketball program received a major recruiting prize one day before it opens its 2009-2010 season as Chiney Ogwumike, the nation's top-ranked recruit for 2010, signed a letter of intent with Stanford on Thursday, according to the Houston Chronicle.
(See story on Chiney Ogwumike's comments about here decision here.)
The 6-2 Ogwumike, who is the sister of Stanford sophomore Nneka Ogwumike, is from Cypress Texas, and her addition immediately gives the Cardinal one of the top-rated recruiting classes in the country. ESPN HoopGurlz ranks the Cardinal class as the fourth-best in the country after placing Stanford at No. 16 before the addition of Ogwumike.
Connecticut and Notre Dame had been the two other schools under consideration by Ogwumike, who is also a standout volleyball player.
She joins a Stanford recruiting class that includes guards Sara James and Toni Kokenis, who are also ranked among the top 70 high school seniors by HoopGurlz.
Like her sister, Chiney Ogwumike is an athletic player with considerable potential to get even better. Nneka Ogwumike has made significant improvement since last season and looks like she could be an All-American before she leaves Stanford.
After this season, Stanford will lose only senior All-American center Jayne Appel from a frontcourt that is generally considered the nation's best this season.
