Here is an assortment of quotes from the coaches during Thursday's men's basketball Pac-10 media day in Los Angeles:
JOHNNY DAWKINS, STANFORD
On Landry Fields:
"We feel he can be as good as any player in the conference."
On freshman guard Gabriel Harris:
"He's a combo guard and he's getting better. But like any freshman he's growing. We feel as the season progresses, he can have an impact."
On the point-guard position:
"We have to do it by committee. We don't have a true point guard, and we'll have to tweek our offense to fit our personnel."
On Andy Brown, who tore his anterior-crucitate ligament for the second time in nine months and is out for the season:
"It was a significant loss. He definitely would have been in our rotation."
When asked about which players beside Fields will provide scoring, Dawkins mentioned Jeremy Green. That suggests that Green's indefinite suspension may not last as long as it appeared initially. He offered no details on the suspension, however.
MIKE MONTGOMERY, CAL
Asked whether he had any sympathy for his former team.
"No, I have no sympathy for the Warriors."
(That's Montgomery trying to be funny. He then went on to talk about Stanford)
"I think Johnny's team is going to be better than what people are giving them credit for. I think it's just a matter of time until he gets the program where he wants it."
On Jorge Gutierrez, who ruined Stanford when the team's played at Cal last season:
"He has very, very good hands. He's sees the game in a way very few people do."
Montgomery was referring to Gutierrez's defensive intensity.
BEN HOWLAND, UCLA
On all the injuries the Bruisn have had:
"I'm hoping by Monday, we'll have everyone out there. Jerime (Anderson) will still be limited. There will be a lot of competitiveness within our team for playing time.. So much is riding on Jerime Anderson being healthy."
Anderson has missed nearly all of preseason with a groin injury, but he and Michal Roll (ankle) and freshman Brendan Lane (ankle) were the only players who are still out with injuries.
On whether Anderson can fill the point-guard role like previous point guards at UCLA:
"I have no doubt about that."
LORENZO ROMAR, WASHINGTON
"This is as quick a team as we've had since our 2005 team with Nate Robinson."
On freshman point guard Abdul Gaddy:
"He's the purest point guard on our team. We have a whole host of guards, but Abdul can score if needed but he's a pass-first point guard, and we haven't had many of those here. And he won't be 18 until January. I think he'll fit in fine with whoever we have out there."
On whether he likes being picked to finish second:
"It may beat the alternative, if people don't have a high opinion of your team. But I remember three years ago we were ranked No. 15 in preseason and we didn't even make it to the (NCAA) Tournament."
Washington was No. 16 in the coaches preseason poll in 2006.
