A second Florida resident has died as a result of the swine flu. The 30-year-old woman who died yesterday had been admitted to Florida Hospital’s Altamonte Springs campus earlier this month with flu symptoms exacerbated by pre-existing respiratory conditions, according to hospital spokeswoman Samantha O'Lenick.

On June 15, a 9-year-old Miami-Dade county boy became the state’s first fatality after he had been in the hospital fro only one day. He had suffered from asthma.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Florida has 562 confirmed and probable cases of swine flu as of last week.

Pregnant woman as well as people with asthma and other chronic diseases that can compromise immunity are at greater risk of developing more severe symptoms from the new A/H1N1 swine flu strain, and should consult with a doctor if they become ill, since antiviral drugs can lessen the severity of the illness if given within the first 48 hours.
