Howlin Wolf, Chess Records

He was six feet, six inches tall, weighed 300 pounds and had a voice to match: big, rough, loud.He honed his vocal skills before the advent of microphones, when a singer had to belt out a song with all his might to be properly heard in a blues club.

Today marks 99 years since the great Chicago bluesman was born in White Station, Mississippi. He's been in his grave since 1976, but his musical legacy will continue until the end of time.

Take a few minutes to celebrate the man who sang "Wang Dang Doodle," "Goin' Down Slow," "Spoonful," and "Little Red Rooster" before the songs were covered a million times by blues-adoring white rock bands in the 1960's and beyond.

Compilations of his best material are readily available used at your local record store, although his original LPs and singles can go for big bucks on the high-end collector market.

Visit Howlin Wolf's official fansite for more information.
