Alright Atlanta, it is hot!  Whether you're heading out to Lake Lanier Islands or your neighborhood pool, you need to bring the essentials.  Here is a list that you can check off, before you head out the door.  Print it out, add to it, cross some things off, and then keep it in your bag.  Remember to check it each time you use your bag, as some of the items will need to be replaced.

1. An all-over sunscreen for children.  The spray ones work really well as long as you remember to rub it in and re-apply every hour or so.

2. A face sunblock.  A stick works well and should be 50+ for faces. And don't forget the ears and lips.

3. Sunscreen for parents.

4. Drinks.  Parents and children alike can get overheated and dehydrated being out in the sun all day.  Make sure you rehydrate with water or sports drinks.

5. Any flotation devices your children may need.  Water-wings, life jackets, floats for babies, etc.

6. Sun hats.  Even though you cover your child's face, it is also important to cover their head.  Scalps and ears can easily sunburn when left unprotected.

7. Snacks.  Depending on how long you plan on being out, you may want to bring picnic items, or just snacks.  Snack size ziploc bags full of healthy options are a great choice for kids during a pool break.  Think of items that won't go bad in the sun, like pretzels, cereal mix, raisins, or whole fruits like apples, clementines, and bananas.

8. Towels.  Towels can be cumbersome to carry.  We cut back, and just bring 2 towels for the 4 of us, which saves on laundry too.  Whatever works for your family.

9. Dry clothes and diapers.  If you have a long car ride back home, no one will be comfortable in wet suits and soggy diapers.  Bring what you need in resealable bags, to keep them dry until the time you need them.

10. Water toys.  Oh the choices they have!  Diving rings, diving sticks, goggles, water guns, sand toys and shovels- whatever keeps your family happy and occupied while enjoying the water.

There you go, now go beat the heat and have fun in the sun!
