After alarming talks of "Swine Flu" parties, the Center for Disease Control issued a statement on "The Doctors" yesterday saying this is "not a good idea".

The premise behind a "Swine Flu Party" is to expose your children to the flu now, so it wouldn't be worse latter on.  This was often a common practice when trying to expose your children to Chicken Pox.  The difference here is that getting the chicken pox later in life is more dangerous than getting it earlier.  Getting the flu (in particular H1N1) is not the same case.  The flu is dangerous at any time, and you should be doing everything possible to prevent your children from getting it.  And you certainly should not expose them to the germ.

This flu does not discriminate; it is dangerous to the young and old and in between.  However, they are seeing that some of the older generations are faring better with this flu than the others.  Young children are at risk for later infections, like pneumonia, that can be brought on by the H1N1 virus.  This is even more of a reason NOT to intentionally expose them to the virus.

I use to think all parties were a good idea, but this is one that I'm going to have to pass on attending.  Instead of exposing yourselves to the germ, take the CDC's recommendation, and get the vaccination instead.
