He was called racist, terrorist, within other slurs by protesters but Arizona’s Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arapio didn’t seem to be bothered. Arapio was the guest speaker at a fundraiser for Orange County Sheriff candidate Bill Hunt at the Phoenix Club in Anaheim, Thursday.
The controversial police chief was received by a group of about 50 immigrants’ rights activists who carried signs stating "Terrorist," and "Immigration Reform Now," message they reinforced by chants of phrases as “Arapio, racist, you are a terrorist.”
In contrast, inside the club, Arpaio was greeted and cheered by more than 200 people as a hero, while Hunt was proclaimed as the next toughest sheriff, in this case, for California. Hunt, is a former lieutenant making his second bid for office, to win the seat now held by Sheriff Sandra Hutchens.
As part of his speech, Arpaio said that the justice department "is sending nine attorneys to come after me, to investigate my office because we're enforcing laws. It's sad. So, I kicked them out." The audience reacted with cheers.
"When you're right … you should fight. And I think Bill personifies that," Arpaio added.
The Maricopa County Sheriff Office (MCSO) is under federal investigation on suspicion of racial profiling, while Arapio’s earned tough reputation includes forcing inmates to live in tents and wear pink underwear.
