We have all been there before at the end of a golf tournament you and the other members of your group walk into the scoring area, and look up to see it.  There it is written in sharpie on the board and it sticks out like a sore thumb...a number so absurd that all you can do is laugh.  Whether it be a 50 or 53 or something of that sort all you can do is snicker.

The best part is when you see the group that walks up to claim the prize and it is the people on the range who couldn't get the ball airborne.  It always boggles my mind to see groups come in with a straight face and throw a number like that up on the board.  Think about it... to shoot a 50 on a par 72 golf course you would have to birdie EVERY single par 4 and par 3 along with Eagling all 4 of the par 5's.  Although you could realistically have a putt at doing this on each hole there is NO WAY any four people could make that many putts on one day.  I don't think Tiger, Phil, Vijay, and Sergio could shoot 50 in a tourney like this.  I have played on some pretty solid teams for tournaments and everyone has played very well, and we made a lot of putts and shot 56 or so.  This is a pretty impressive number and we didn't even place in the top 3!

Is there a solution?  I doubt it because I don't think many charity or corporate tournaments really would care to invest enough to have an official walking around with every group to keep score for them and make sure things are on the up and up.  So I guess all of us honest golfers will have to continue to play hard, and laugh at those who feel it necessary to Judge Smails their score.
