Let's dabble in a world of "what if's" for a second here.  What if gambling on the golf course were legal, and what if you and your playing partners happened to have some wagers on your round.  What if you had a putt to win on the 18th for 10 times the amount you normally played for?

These thoughts crossed my mind yesterday as I was watching the Tour Championship.  As I pondered the whole FedEx Cup idea the PGA started last year it made me wonder what it would be like to have a putt for $10 million dollars.  I found this to be a bit hard to wrap my arms around as, unfortunately, this amount of money is beyond reason to me at this point in time.  However, as I thought about it more and how the normal PGA purse is around the $1 million mark it got me to thinking.  I wonder how nervous a Vijay Singh, Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods, Anthony Kim or other gets when they have a putt worth that much money.  I would think even the world's best would be shaking at a putt for ten times what the normal purse is.  Not to mention it being $10,000,000.  Obviously that is enough to retire on right there, and to live a nice lifestyle at that.

We have all faced pressure putts during our time playing golf whether it be to beat a friend, set a personal best, win some sort of event, or just to make your first par.  I know when I have these thoughts the inner mind demons starting dancing around with the "don't push it," "don't leave it short," thoughts that run through our head.  To take this even a step further golf really is a game of "what if's" especially for us amateurs.  What if I slice this one?  What if I don't hit this one solid?  What if I don't hit my drive past the ladies tee?  What if this isn't the right club?  What if the wind is stronger then I think?  What if I pull this through that persons porch window?  What if I leave this putt short can I make the next one?  What if I try and go over that 100 ft. high tree?  What if I hit it perfect and it goes in the hole?  What if I lay up?  What if I go for it?

I guess what I am really getting at is it is nice to think that although the stakes are much higher that maybe just maybe PGA tour players and us common golfers aren't really that different after all.  It is just the stakes that are.
