Let's just say I am not someone who impresses easily, and consider myself to be a realist. I don't see a glass that is half full of water or that is half empty. I simply see a glass with water in it. To put it in simpler terms, "it is what it is." With that being said I was blow away with the wonderful charity event I attended this past weekend.
A friend of mine called me last week and asked me if I wanted to play in a golf tournament that her company was sponsoring, and just as any avid golfer would I jumped at the chance to play FREE golf. To me it was a good opportunity to go out and play a nice course (Stoneybrook West), collect a goodie bag, and grab a free lunch for simply waking up early on a Saturday morning and knowing the right person. Why not?
Although the free golf, food, and goodie bag were great I left the course blow away with many other things. What I did not know was that the tournament was to benefit the Rally for the Cure, supporting the promise of the Susan B Komen Rally for the Cure of breast cancer. This particular event was being run by the Executive Womens Golf Association (EWGA) Orlando chapter. I must say I could not have been more impressed by the EWGA, and it's amazing members. They were friendly, welcoming, and very good golfers. I had the pleasure of playing with the chapter VP and was amazed at all the wonderful things this fantastic organization does on a weekly, monthly, and yearly basis. I would highly encourage anybody to look into this group whether it be for networking purposes, social purposes, or any other.
However, the part of the day that had my jaw on the floor was listening to the stories of some of the folks in the luncheon afterward, and listening to how breast cancer has effected them. Especially so with the keynote speaker who is a 2 time survivor of this terrible disease, and shared with us her incredible story of perseverance. Listening to her speak, and hearing the stories of others in the room really made me realize how lucky I am to have the wonderful women in my life that I do. To think of how strong these women were to have beaten this awful disease amazes me, and had me in awe of their courage and will to live. My friend and I arrived at this even in the morning look forward to some free golf but left as two changed individuals after hearing from these amazing people.
I encourage everyone to visit the Susan B Komen foundation website at www.komen.org and also to look into the EWGA which can be found at www.ewga.com . October is Breast Cancer Awareness month nationwide for more information please visit www.nationalbreastcancer.org.
