Florida State University and the Morcom Aquatic Center will play host the 2009 Team USA World Championship team July 9-12 as they prepare for the World Championships in Rome, Italy.

“I’m very excited and I think it’s a huge opportunity to have world level athletes training at our facility,” FSU diving coach Patrick Jeffrey said. “It’s great to see our facility being used the way it was meant to be used.”

Among the 12-member squad is Seminole Terry Horner. The senior made the team on the strength of his one-meter performance during qualifying. Horner was both the 2007 NCAA Champion and the 2008 United States National Champion on the one-meter. He is a four-time All-American and two-time Honorable Mention All-American at Florida State. He has also won a pair of ACC Championships.

“Having one of our own athletes involved is obviously a great accomplishment and one of our goals for the program,” Jeffrey said. “Terry is very excited about it and has worked hard to get here.”

Horner and Team USA will spend its four days in Tallahassee acclimating to diving outdoors. The competition in Rome will be at an outdoor facility which is a challenge for divers who are used to practicing year round indoors.

“A lot of the teams practice indoors and at the World Championships they will be outdoors in a warm climate,” Jeffrey said. “Diving outdoors is a lot different because there are not a lot of visual cues and the weather can play a factor so you have to get acclimated to that.”

The World Championships run from July 17-25. Florida State will also host the United States National Diving Championships from August 11-15 at the Morcom Aquatic Center.
