The Florida State volleyball team’s magical 2009 season hit another high note Friday night as the No. 17 Seminoles swept Virginia (25-12, 26-24, 25-19) to set a new school record for most conference wins in a row.
With eight-straight Atlantic Coast Conference victories, FSU (20-2, 12-2 ACC) is experiencing its greatest run of games in the league since the 1998 team won seven in a row. The 1992 squad also reeled off seven consecutive conference wins.
In the Cavaliers’ (9-14, 4-8) home gym, the Seminoles came out firing on all cylinders in the first set and ran away with 25-12 win.
“That first set was probably the best first set we have played on all year long,” FSU head coach Chris Poole said. “We played really well. We limited our mistakes and unforced errors. That is what we as a coaching staff have preaching to them on a daily basis. When you don’t make mistakes you are difficult to stop.
“That first set the tone for us and we played consistent the whole match, which is a good when you’re playing on the road.”
The ’Noles’ steady play throughout the night didn’t mean that achieving the 12th sweep of the year – including a second of the season against Virginia – was easy.
The Cavaliers answered in the second game and built a 21-15 lead. But as they have shown all season long, this is an FSU team that handles adversity quite well and the Seminoles stormed back for an exciting 26-24 win.
“We were down late and played nearly flawless for the last 11 points or so,” Poole said.
Up 2-0, Florida State then finished off the Cavs with a 25-19 triumph in the third and final set.
Senior middle blocker Brianna Barry and junior outside hitter Stephanie Neville led the way in Charlottesville, Va. with nine kills apiece for FSU. Senior middle blocker Jordana Price also contributed six kills and eight blocks.
Sophomore outside hitter Rachael Morgan had eight kills, true freshman outside hitter Fatma Yildirim had seven and senior outside hitter Mira Djuric finished with six.
Senior setter Nikki Baker tied with junior libero Jenna Romanelli for the team lead in digs with eight. Baker also contributed 14 assists while true freshman setter Duygu Duzceler had 18.
Djuric had three aces.
The ’Noles have a quick turnaround now as they play at Virginia Tech on Saturday at 6 p.m.
