For Florida State, it was business as usual as the Seminoles cruised by the North Carolina State Wolfpack on senior day 2-0.
After a sluggish first half performance, the Seminoles rid themselves of the North Carolina hangover with a much sharper effort in the second 45.
The extra flair in the attack paid dividends as the Seminoles sunk the Wolfpack hopes of an upset when striking tandem Jessica Price and Tiffany McCarty combined for a double-fire in the 63rd and 66th minute respectively. Price found the back of the net via an Ines Jaurena cross to the back post and McCarty converted from 12 yards out.
With the win, Florida State completed their second unbeaten home regular season in school history - the first time since 2001.
“Today we started out slow,” Price said. “But we got the result and that is important.
“On the first goal, Switzer was working really hard and got a tackle and knocked the ball out to Ines. Ines put a great ball in and I just got up and headed the ball in. The other one was off of a throw-in. Tiffany turned her defender and finished. It was really nice.”
Florida State entered the ascendency after creative midfielder Amanda DaCosta was brought on early in the second half and began to pull the strings in the final third. It was the junior’s efforts that provided the cutting edge to spark the result.
“We know that DaCosta has a lot of special qualities,” Mark Krikorian said. “I thought when she came into the game, she brought a lot of energy and raised the level of the game very quickly. The first one for sure, and helped create the second one.”
While wins and losses are important to any team, the relationship between players and coaches on a squad should never be overshadowed. On Sunday, three seniors played their final regular season home game at Florida State.
All three players played a role in the Seminoles victory over North Carolina State and the success of the recent seasons.
“I am thrilled with them and happy for them,” Krikorian said of his seniors. “They have had great careers. Kimmy Diaz has been as great of a teammate as it gets. She has always been there when we need her. Lauren Switzer transferred in and had three very good years for us. Becky Edwards, what can you say about her? She has matured from a shy, young lady into our captain here.”
“I love all three of them,” Price said of her teammates. “They are amazing people and amazing players. I’m really sad to see them go this year, but I know they have had a good experience here. We are going to play our hardest for them.”
With the regular season home schedule all wrapped up, Florida State still has one more challenging road trip ahead before the ACC tournament. The Seminoles will head to the state of Virginia for two tough conference match ups this upcoming weekend.
“Now we need to go on the road for a Friday and Sunday game - Virginia and Virginia Tech,” Krikorian said of the upcoming challenges. “Neither of those teams are easy to beat, especially in their back yard. So we will go up there and measure ourselves against two of the best teams in the conference. Virginia, I know their record doesn’t look good, but believe me they are very talented. Virginia Tech - their record speaks for itself.”
