You’d think that between its limited space, smaller apartments, and a steadily-growing population, Hoboken would be one of New Jersey’s least welcoming places as far as dogs are concerned. Well think again.
Encompassing just one square mile, Hoboken is becoming an increasingly popular place for dog owners to live. What Hoboken lacks in spacious living quarters, it more than makes up for with a variety of dog parks, pet stores, and dog-friendly restaurants.
Many Hoboken restaurants with outdoor seating will allow you to bring your dog along while you dine. This courtesy applies to dogs big and small. The only caveat is that dogs must still be on a leash and are sometimes not allowed on the actual outdoor premises, but rather, right outside the dining area. For example, some outdoor cafes will have a fenced-lined patio, and the rules will dictate that dogs be kept on the outer, non-café side of the fence. Many establishments not only encourage owners to bring their dogs along, but also provide water bowls for dogs upon request.
Of course, keep in mind that some diners will be less than thrilled with the idea of dining next to a dog. If you do bring your dog out to dinner, then it is your responsibility to make sure that he is not interfering with other guests. Also, if your dog tends to be extremely vocal, then as a matter of courtesy, it might be best to leave him at home. After all, it wouldn’t be pleasant for anyone involved – yourself included – if your dog spent the entire meal barking his head off.

Remember, a dog-friendly dinner date should be fun for your dog as well. Be sure to bring some treats along for him so that he can partake in some fine food alongside you. Finally, it never hurts to thank the restaurant staff for accommodating your dog on your way out. After all, a dog-friendly attitude can be hard to come by. Luckily, you’re quite likely to find one in Hoboken.
