The Mississippi River is like a long leash curling around the city and, along most of it, there are levees. You won’t find much shade on the levees, but there is usually a breeze to help moderate the heat. Restrooms, trash bins, and water are up to you—in some place, you can duck into a restaurant or bar.

On the Eastbank, you and your dog can travel along Riverfront Park across from the French Quarter. It tends to be crowded and doesn’t have many grassy areas for play, but it’s nice for a walk or jog. If you live Uptown, the levee behind the Riverbend area is a popular place to take dogs. Leash laws are officially in effect but aren’t enforced. If your dog doesn’t come when called, keep the leash on, since the traffic can get heavy near there. A recreational park known as “The Fly,” located behind Audubon Zoo, offers shade, restrooms, trash bins, and parking.

On the Westbank, the levee is made for running from downtown Gretna all the way to Algiers Point and beyond. Great views of New Orleans will keep you interested; interspersed park benches and trash bins will give your dog something to sniff. For the most part, though, it is straight-out exercise. You’ll want to bring your own water and, for your pet’s safety, avoid exercising during the hottest part of the day.

*Based on the following criteria:
a) Availability of parking, shade, drinking water, and restrooms
b) Ease and convenience of poop clean-up
c) Exercise factor (safety, space for running, swimming, fetch, etc.)
d) Beauty and diversity of setting
Note: Leash laws apply to all spots on the list.
