Dogs of the 9th Ward (D9) lost Remy, one of its beloved rescues, to cancer last week and has set up a memorial fund in his name to aid abandoned dogs in need of urgent care. D9 takes the dogs that someone no longer wants and, through the medical help of Prytania Veterinary Hospital and generous donations, gives them the chance to be the dogs everyone wishes they had.
Saint Bernards are bred to be rescue dogs; ironically, Remy had to be rescued himself after Hurricane Katrina left him starving, riddled with heartworms, and suffering from infected bullet wounds. After Kelly Gaus, the founder of D9, took him in, he pulled through and spent the rest of his brief life doing what dogs do best—spreading love and affection to those who need it most. At the end of his life, he was generously sharing his home with three other D9 rescue dogs. When he was diagnosed with terminal cancer last week, Gaus had to make the tough decision to let him go.
To commemorate his courageous life, Remy’s Memorial Rescue Fund will be used to help the city’s neediest homeless dogs—“emergency rescues who are very sick, badly injured, or in urgent need of medical care. An emphasis will be placed on helping extra-large breeds from the New Orleans area and will be the only dogs in D9’s program not necessarily from the 9th Ward.
If you’d like to make a donation to Remy’s fund, any and all amounts are welcome. Checks should be made payable to Prytania Veterinary Hospital and sent to Dogs of the 9th Ward, 2315 Congress St, New Orleans, LA 70117. More details about the organization, where they'll be this week, and the good work that they do are available at
