Traveling with your exotic pet. If your holidays require travel depending on your breed of exotic pet, destination, and length of stay you may decide to bring your pet along, board them, or get an in-house sitter.
If you decide to bring your exotic pet along on a car trip follow a few considerations:
-First make sure your pet does not get car sick. Make sure wherever your pet is in the vehicle they can get air and stretch out comfortably. Make sure your pet is comfortable on the ride just as you would want to be for a long car ride.
-Make sure your pet is in a safe area in the vehicle. This can be leashed or in a breed-specific, large, comfortable cage with plenty of fresh water, food, and comfortable bedding. Make sure the cage is accessible to air in the vehicle and your pet isn't cramped. It is important not to let a small pet free-roam in the vehicle as you drive. Ferrets in particular can get in small spaces and can caused harm to themselves.
-Having an I.D. for your pet with their name, breed, and other pertinent information is also a good idea for travel. Health records also are a good idea to have on hand for long trips.
-Ensure that your pet is well to travel. Make sure your pet is free from illness and up to date on any vaccinations he or she may need. A vet visit may be necessary for long trips.
-Check on your pet often to make sure they are okay and traveling well. When you stop for a break it may be necessary to give your exotic a break from riding in the car as well.
-Also, make sure your destination is comfortable with you bringing exotic pets along for the visit. Some destinations will be more comfortable with your pet than others.
-Finally, pack a pet bag filled with all the essentials you will need for your trip. This can include your pets favorite food, toys, nail trimmers, hairball tonic, treats, vitamins, extra water, leash, sweater etc... Whatever your pet will need. Also make sure you have a cage or portable kennel big enough for your pet to comfortably rest in at your destination.
