After starring at Smyrna High School on both the Bulldogs baseball and football teams during his high school career, fans in Tennessee and the Southeast for that matter, knew that Sonny Gray had the chance to be something special.
As a quarterback, Gray led the 5A team to back to back state championships his junior and senior year and even though his team on the baseball diamond did not capture a state title, they were always in the mix and seemed to win every time that Gray took the mound.
Gray smoothly made the transition to the college ranks and by the end of this past season, the right hander was arguably the Commodores best pitcher and someone opposing batters did not look forward to facing.
Gray was named to the SEC All-Freshman team and his accolades did not stop there.
After the conclusion of the Commodores season, Gray was invited to try out for the US National Team and to no surprise he made the squad.
In the team's last game against Canada, Gray had an inning of work in relief and was up to his usual self, striking out two of the three batters that he faced, helping the Red, White and Blue earn an easy 20-3 win in the game, which was played in Durham, N.C.
