After months of cataclysmic, escalating hype, it's almost here: "Watchmen", the Zach Snyder-directed adaptation of what was supposed to be the unfilmable graphic novel by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. The Hollywood premiere is tonight (Mar. 2) at Grauman's Chinese Theater, and you can watch the red carpet here, if you want. For everyone else, the film hits theaters everywhere on Friday (Mar. 6, in case you missed one of the ads on TV, or on billboards, or your TiVo...).
To get ready, the Onion AV Club has a look at 24 more graphic novels they'd like to see made into movies. I've already given you a look at "The coolest comic book movies you'll probably never see." And we're close enough to the actual release date to start getting some critical reaction. Rotten Tomatoes has a round-up of the reviews so far. The consensus is strongly positive, but that's mostly the online critics. The bigger names, like Variety and the Hollywood Reporter, didn't like it.
But it's not like bad reviews are going to stop any of the slobbering fanboys from showing up at the first midnight screening they can find.
The big question is, has it been overhyped? Well, if your answer is yes, then you should probably hide out for the next four days. Because we're just reaching the peak of geek, and there's still a ways before the summit.
