Yesterday's Big Thing: Google. It's a multi-billion dollar corporation, challenging Apple and Microsoft. But as a search engine, it's become a victim of its own success. It tends to take the guesswork out of finding stuff on the Web, but it also removes the surprises. Also, even your mom knows how to use it. Definitely not the bleeding edge of trendiness anymore.
That brings us to...
Today's Big Thing: StumbleUpon. This user-rated search utility creates an experience a lot like searching the Web back at the dawn of the Internet. The Next Big Thing: Twine. Twine is a search utility that takes a middle path between StumbleUpon and Google; attempting to use keywords found in Web pages to offer targeted, specific info to its users. While still very much in beta, in theory, this should offer the best of both worlds. It's got a long way to go yet, but it seems to be headed on the right path.
