Their smoke detectors may have failed them, but their dog did not.

Around 3 a.m., November 4, Dash, a two year old border collie-Australian shepherd mix, barked and growled to alert the Sizemore family of Liberty, Indiana, to a growing fire in their home.

“He saved our lives. We just barely got out. If it wasn't for him we'd all be dead,” Laura Sizemore said.

The fire started in a detached garage and spread to the back of the house.

Liberty Fire Chief Denny Alcorn said, “The fire gutted the back of the house and the inside was on fire. The garage was on the ground when we got there."

Alcorn added “It could have been a lot worse if it wasn't for the dog.”
