The Rays ended their painful 11-game losing streak last night, but let’s be honest – it’s time to look ahead to 2010. Major League Baseball released the official schedule for next season today and here are the highlights for the Rays:
The Rays will open at home against Baltimore on Tuesday, April 6. The Yankees will also come to town for the weekend on that same opening homestand.
The Scott Kazmir reunion could possibly take place when the Rays visit Los Angeles to face the Angels May 10-12. If they miss Kaz in May, a second opportunity will come when the Angels visit the Trop September 17-19.
The interleague schedule has the Rays in Houston from May 21-23. The Rays will leave Tropicana Field behind to get a taste of Minute Maid for the first time since 2003. The Rays will also see Turner Field in June when they visit the Braves for the first time since 2001. The obligatory "Florida Series" will take place on back-to-back weekends in June. The Rays host the Marlins in St. Pete June 11-13 and they’ll go to Miami from June 18-20. The other two interleague series at the Trop will feature the San Diego Padres and the Arizona Diamondbacks. The excitement rating has to be about a 1 or 2 out of 10 for the interleague matchups.
The Rays will end the season with a four game series in Kansas City from September 30-October 3, 2010.
The schedule for the always intense Red Sox and Yankees games looks like this:
Red Sox
At Fenway Park – April 16-19, June 29-30, September 6-8
At Tropicana Field – May 24-26, July 5-7, August 27-29
Yankees
At Yankee Stadium – May 19-20, July 16-18, September 20-23
At Tropicana Field – April 9-11, July 30-August 1, September 13-15
Hopefully the Rays learned something from their failures this September during the brutal stretch of the schedule when they faced Detroit, Boston and New York for 17 straight games because there is a similar stretch ahead in 2010. From September 6-23 the Rays will play 13 of 16 games against the Red Sox, Yankees and Angels. Brutal.
