Rays need to put Red Sox comeback behind them
The Red Sox made a miracle comeback against the Rays last night. They proved that they are never out of a postseason series, no matter how bad things may look. A lot of credit needs to go to the Boston bats that woke up and delivered two-out hit after two-out hit.
The Rays learned a hard lesson from the Red Sox in Game Five about what it means to be a champion. Let’s hope they take it to heart.
Rather than rehash a painful loss, however, let’s concentrate on what the Rays need to do to put this loss behind them.
Joe Maddon is great at keeping this team’s mindset in the proper perspective. He stays positive all the time and that is exactly what the Rays need right now. I have no doubt that he will succeed in getting this team ready to play at the Trop for Game Six.
When evaluating their current situation the Rays can take two approaches. One would be to say: “We were seven outs away from the World Series with a seven-run lead and blew it. Our two best relievers suddenly turned into Aaron Heilman and Scott Schoeneweis. Now we have to come home and play a game we didn’t expect to play and the Red Sox have all the momentum. We are in trouble.”
Yikes.
Hopefully the Rays have already pushed those thoughts out of their heads. They should be thinking more like this: “We are going back to the Trop needing only one of two games to put this team away. Our bullpen has had only one bad game all postseason. If we keep hitting the way we have been, there’s no reason why we can’t get this done.”
The Rays are a very, very young team and so far they have remained aloof from the pressure of playoff baseball.
Last night, the Red Sox turned up the heat. The Rays need to stay cool and take care of business.
